“A deer jumped through my window” and other bizarre insurance claims

Insurance agents hear some of the wildest stories out there. Here are some of the most bizarre stories we’ve heard: Stay tuned for Part II tomorrow!

#1- Lawnmower gone wild- One policyholder filed a claim for his lawnmower after he accidentally drove it into a lake behind his house. “The brakes stopped working and I was too afraid to jump off…so I just rode it into the water!”

Lesson learned: Mishaps such as this are not covered under a standard home insurance policy- home insurance policies only provide coverage for damage caused by covered perils such as wind, hail, theft, fire and riots.

#2- An evening surprise- One customer calling to get some home insurance quotes told us that he came home to find a baffling scenario- a broken living room window and a 6-point buck wandering around his kitchen. “It took me a while to put together what happened, but I think the deer accidentally jumped right through our picture window and ended up in the house!”

Lesson learned: Damage caused by wild animals is not typically covered under a standard home policy.

#3- Our favorite coverage questions- We often get questions about whether a home policy will cover damage from flood, lightening, etc. However this was one of our favorites: “Does my home insurance policy cover me if my horse eats my neighbor’s flowers? How about if my horse were hit by a car?”

Lesson learned: A standard home policy typically covers damages caused to others by your household pets, however, you should really ask your insurance agents about the specifics of your policy for this one. And in the case of the horse being hit by a car- no, pets are not covered as part of your contents coverage. Check out pet insurance for a situation like that.

#4- A Memorable 4th of July- One of our customers told us about a home insurance claim they filed after some fireworks that they set off accidentally shot through a neighbor’s second floor window causing damage to the rugs and wall coverings.

Lesson learned: Your home insurance policy will typically cover damages that you, or other insured members of your household, have caused to others. Talk to your agent before filing a claim and weigh the cost of paying the damages out of your pocket before filing.

#5- A buzz worthy question- One customer called us to let us know that bees had nested in his sub-flooring and he wanted to file a claim. “Is this covered”? He wanted to know…

Lesson learned: Insect infestations are not typically covered under a home insurance policy. Call your exterminator!

…more to come tomorrow!

Volcanos and Spacecrafts- 5 Strange Things does cover

Most people have better things to do in their spare time then read through their homeowners insurance policy for fun. However, if you did decide to flip through the pages you might be interested to learn about some of the things your policy covers
that you weren’t aware of. Here are a few things that some policies cover that most homeowners would never think to ask about. (Please note that all policies differ and you should consult your agent for specifics on your coverage).

Volcanic eruptions- Most people don’t live close enough to an active volcano to worry about this one, but if you did- it’s good to know you’d be covered! Most policies will offer coverage for damage caused by airborne debris from a volcano.

Aircraft AND Spacecraft Damage! That’s right, according to some home insurance policies you will be covered if your home sustains damage caused by “contact with an aircraft or spacecraft”.

Vandalism and malicious mischief- Most policies will cover damage or destruction to your home as long as it has not stayed vacant for a certain period of time, for example, for more than 30 or 60 days. However, this portion of a policy doesn’t usually cover theft, burglary or larceny. Theft coverage is typically provided under another provision in your policy and separate coverage limits apply.

Lightning- If lightning strikes your home the resulting damage is usually covered under a standard homeowners insurance policy.

Explosions- Depending on the source of ignition, damage caused by explosions in your home may be covered by a homeowners insurance policy. Most policies, for example, will cover explosions that are caused by an accumulation of gas or unconsumed fuel within the firebox or combustion chambers of a water heater or oven.

Do you really know who you’re hiring off Craigslist?

free classified sites such as craigslist.org have come to be a great resource for people wanting to find home service contractors in their area. However, unfortunately for some, the convenience has come at too high of a price. Liability scams have popped up across the country where a homeowner has hired a not-so-reputable
service provider who advertised their services on a site like craigslist.org. The service provider then fakes or sometimes even purposely sustains an injury on the premises thus suing the homeowner for their injuries. Service providers who are not insured, or sufficiently insured, can be a major risk for homeowners and the liability portion of their homeowners insurance. Follow these tips to make sure you’re not setting yourself up for a liability lawsuit next time you hire a plumber/painter/handyman, etc.:

1) Do your homework. If you find a service provider advertising on craigslist.org do your research on them. Do they have a website? Where are they located? How long have they been in business? See how much you can find out about them just by scrolling through the web.

2) Get the documentation. Ask to review their license and insurance information up front. Simply asking whether or not they are licensed and insured leaves you to trust that they are 1) telling the truth and 2) sufficiently insured. Ask for a copy of their business insurance declaration page and their business license certificate. Go the extra step and call your homeowners insurance agent to see if the limits on the business insurance coverage is enough. Make sure the policy is effective and not expired. Taking a little extra precaution now can save you a major headache down the line.

3) Ask for references. One of best ways to know if a service provider is reputable is to hear about their quality of work from other customers. Ask for a list of references which they should be able to readily provide. Make the phone calls and find out if their customers are really satisfied with the performed work.

How to insure your vacation home

So you’ve decided to take the leap and purchase a vacation home. With all the things you need to consider, how you are going to insure that home is just one of them. However, depending on your intended use for the vacation home, the type of insurance you need will be very important.

What type of policy do you need for your Vacation Home?

Oftentimes the term “vacation home” can be used to mean a few different things.  If you are purchasing a vacation home that will be used solely by your family and not rented out to others throughout the year then you will most likely need a “seasonal” or “secondary” home insurance policy. This type of policy will provide coverage for the dwelling of your vacation home, the contents of the home, liability and MedPay claims, and more.

On the other hand, if you intend to rent out your vacation home to others for vacation purposes you will need a “landlord” or “rental” home insurance policy. This type of policy is unique in that it typically provides coverage for the dwelling of the home however it offers flexible coverage options for contents and liability limits depending on your specific use for the home. Also, it usually provides additional coverage for loss of rental income in the event the home is damaged in a covered claim and you are unable to rent it out in the meantime. This coverage can be critical if you depend on the rental income to cover the mortgage payments on the home.

Consider Flood Insurance if Not Required

If your vacation home is located near a coastline or major body of water and you have a mortgage, you may have no choice in this department. Your lender may require that you carry a flood insurance policy to protect the home in the event of a flood since flood coverage is not provided under a standard homeowners insurance policy. However even if your lender doesn’t require a flood policy (or if you don’t have a mortgage) you should consider getting a flood insurance policy for your vacation property just as you would for your primary residence. Even just a few inches of flood water can do a devastating amount of damage to your vacation home so talk to your agent about how much coverage they recommend.

Vacation homes can get discounts too

If you currently take advantage of homeowners insurance discounts on your primary home policy you might be wondering if the same types of discounts apply for your vacation home. The good news is that typically they do! Most carriers will reward you with policy savings if you have multiple policies with them- for example, if you insure your primary home with them as well. Also, if you have a superior credit-based insurance score and/or if the home is equipped with safety devices such as central fire and burglar alarms you can save additional money as well.
